Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES)

The Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy / AIES is a private non-partisan re-search institute established in September 1996. The institute was founded by Austrian security experts as well as individuals involved in politics, economics and academia. As a research institute and think tank the AIES contributes to the enhancement of the knowledge and awareness of European and international policies and security issues in Austria. The institute cooperates regularly with similar European and international institutions.

Dr. Franco Algieri

In April 2008 Franco Algieri became Director of Research at the Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES). Before joining the AIES he was a research fellow first at the Institute for European Politics in Bonn and then at the Center for Applied Policy Research (C.A.P) in Munich. His research covers the following topics: the development of European integration, the foreign, security and defence policy of the EU, the EU as a global actor, as well as EU-Asia relations (with special emphasis on EU-China relations). He has published widely on these topics.

Franco Algieri studied Political Science and Sinology in Freiburg, Taibei and Tübingen as well as European Studies at the College of Europe in Bruges. He holds a doctorate degree and an M.A. both from the Eberhard-Karls-University Tübingen and a Diploma of Advanced European Studies from the College of Europe.

He is a lecturer at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Tübingen and he had also lectured at the Geschwister-Scholl-Institute at the University of Munich. The Renmin University of China in Beijing appointed him as Guest Professor at the School of International Studies and Senior Fellow at the Center for European Studies. He is a member of the Arbeitskreis Europäische Integration (AIES).

Dr. Arnold Kammel

Arnold Kammel studied Law and Political Science in Graz, Vienna and Alcalá de Henares (Madrid) and holds a Doctor of Law degree of the University of Graz. He obtained a Master of Arts in Business from the University of Applied Sciences in Eisenstadt. In 2004 Arnold Kammel became a research fellow at the Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES).

Since 2007, Arnold Kammel is the Secretary General of the AIES. Before joining the AIES he was a research fellow at the Institute of Austrian, European and Comparative Public Law and Political Science at the Karl-Franzens-University of Graz. His research covers the topic European integration (focussing on EU foreign, security and defence policy) as well as EU Governance and the EU Mediterranean Policy. He is a lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences in Eisenstadt.
